Our Advanced Driving Schools (ADS) are designed to help you become a more skilled, confident, and aware driver, both on the track and on the road. The focus is simple and consistent across everything we do: safety, learning, and fun.
While the program is rooted in BMW performance driving, we welcome drivers with any brand and model of vehicle. Two-door and four-door cars, and even station wagons, are welcome. Some small SUVs are accepted in the novice group; however, certain convertibles and all open-wheeled cars are not permitted for safety reasons. If you have questions about your vehicle, please contact Trillium’s Safety Steward at safetysteward@trilliumbmwclub.ca.
Whether you are attending for the first time or returning to continue your development, each experience builds on the last. There is always more to learn. Our goal is to help you develop a deeper understanding of your vehicle and a stronger connection to how it responds in different situations. That awareness is what ultimately improves driver control and confidence.
You will work closely with a dedicated instructor who will be sitting in the right-hand seat during on-track sessions. Instruction is structured, progressive, and tailored to your level of skill, ensuring you are continuously learning in a supportive and controlled environment.
Classroom sessions provide the theory behind each exercise and show how to apply it in practice. They are also an opportunity to ask questions and collaborate with fellow drivers about different corners, techniques, and vehicle dynamics. Our classroom instructors are skilled drivers and experienced racers who bring practical insight to every lesson.
Across the weekend, you will develop core driving fundamentals, including vision, smooth inputs, such as steering, braking, and acceleration. Your in-car instructor will guide you through entering and exiting the track, where and how to pass safely, and how to execute smooth corners using the three fundamental phases: entry, apex, and exit.
The skid pad is a cornerstone of driver development at BMW Trillium’s Advanced Driving School. It is a wide-open prepared surface that allows you to safely explore the limits of your car’s handling at low speeds. The purpose is simple: to help you develop precise car control, understand weight transfer, and improve reaction skills in a controlled environment.
During skid pad sessions, you will practise recognising and correcting understeer and oversteer, managing tire grip at the limit, and executing emergency maneuvers without the risks associated with high-speed track driving.
Group Session Schedule
- C Group (Novice): 4 skid pad sessions per weekend
- B Group (Intermediate): 2 skid pad sessions per weekend
Key Skills and Exercises
- Car Control: Learn steering correction and throttle management to maintain control when traction is lost.
- Oversteer Correction: Practice controlling the rear of the car in a safe, repeatable figure-eight pattern.
- Understeer Correction: Develop techniques to regain front tire grip by adjusting throttle and steering.
- Weight Transfer Management: Understand how braking, acceleration, and lifting off the throttle affect vehicle balance and grip.
- Vision Training: Focus on looking where you want the car to go, not at the obstacle or direction of the skid.
Benefits of Skid Pad Training
- Safety at Low Speeds: Experience the car at the limit of traction, usually below 30 km/h, reducing the risk of vehicle damage.
- Enhanced Confidence: Practising controlled skids and recovery helps you remain calm and react safely at higher speeds on the track.
Skid pad sessions are designed to complement your in-class and on-track learning, ensuring you build a complete understanding of vehicle dynamics in a safe, supportive environment.
A Structured and Engaging Learning Experience
Each weekend is organized into a series of rotations that balance classroom learning with hands-on driving:
- 4–6 in-class sessions focused on theory and technique
- 2–4 skid pad sessions to develop car control in a controlled setting
- 8 on-track driving sessions to apply skills in real time
This structured format ensures variety, repetition, and continuous progression throughout the weekend.
An important part of the experience is our guided track walk at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. In practice, it is more of a drive to each corner, followed by an opportunity to get out of the car and review each corner’s attributes. When the track closes at 5:00 pm this session guided by an experienced instructor, allows you to step away from the car and study each corner in detail, building a clearer understanding of line selection, braking zones, and driving strategy.
Safety is foundational to every aspect of our programs.
Before arriving, all vehicles must pass a technical inspection completed by a licensed mechanic. Drivers are also required to attend driver meetings and follow all on-track protocols. Helmets are mandatory and must have a current Snell date. Loaner helmets are available for free, on a first-come, first-served basis, and cannot be reserved.
Our instructor-led approach ensures that every student is supported, challenged appropriately, and progressing at a pace that prioritizes control and consistency.
While the focus is on driver development, the weekend is also about being part of the club. You will meet fellow members, instructors, and volunteers who are all committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment.
This is your club. The instructors, volunteers, and organizers are here to help you stay safe, learn, and enjoy every moment on track.
- To attend this event, you must be a member or associate member of BMW CCA, with dues paid up, or a current member BMW Clubs Canada.
- You must be 18 years of age or older and have a full driver’s licence (not a provisional or learner’s permit), which is not suspended or revoked.
- All Trillium Advanced Driving Schools and attendees are subject to the rules set out in the BMWCCA Driving Events Operations Manual, linked here. Contact the Trillium Safety Steward if you have questions or clarifications.
If you want to register as anything other than Novice, and your track driving record does not appear in Driving Evals, you will need to send a detailed resume to registrar@trilliumbmwclub.ca. Your resume must detail:
- Your current driver proficiency level (novice, intermediate, advanced, Solo, and SLIP Level if you have one)
- The make, model, year, and modifications to your car
- Driving/racing organizations and tracks you have experience with
- The total number of track days you have run over how many years
- The type of events (driving schools, club days, open lapping, race schools, time trials, etc.) that you have run.
- If you have been signed off to drive solo, but are not pre-approved A-Solo, Group S, etc., how long ago and approximately how many track days you have been signed off to solo
- The name and email address for two references (e.g., HPDE Chief Instructor, driving instructor/coach or licensed racer)
